Moscatel de Setúbal is a fortified dessert wine from the Setúbal Peninsula in Portugal, made mostly from the Muscat de Alexandria or Moscatel Roxo grape varieties. Fermentation is halted by the addition of grape spirit, preserving natural sugar and giving the wine a rich sweetness. It is aged in oak (sometimes in used barrels) for at least one year, and longer-aged versions (5, 10, 20+ years) develop deeper complexity. The climate of the region—warm, Mediterranean with maritime influence—and soils of clay, sand, and limestone contribute to vibrant fruit aromas, good acidity, and the wine’s capacity to age.
Tasting Notes:
-
Appearance: Golden amber, deep topaz with age-darkening tones.
-
Aroma: Aromas of orange blossom, honey, dried apricot, citrus peel, sometimes caramel or raisin as it ages.
-
Palate: Lush sweetness up front, fruit compote (apricot, orange), honeyed richness; balanced by citrus undertones and enough acidity to avoid cloying. Oak gives vanilla or mild spice in older examples.
-
Finish: Long and warming; lingering sweetness, nutty or caramel notes, dried fruit and a gentle bitter-sweet edge from citrus peel or rind.
-
ABV: ~17-20%
Serving Suggestions:
Serve slightly cool (10-12 °C). Excellent as a dessert wine alongside nut-based sweets, dark chocolate, caramel desserts, or with soft cheeses. Also works well as an aperitif in small glasses, or as a digestif after a rich meal.
