Nederburg Baronne is a signature red blend from Nederburg Wines in South Africa, first launched in
1973 by cellar-master Günter Brözel. It’s made predominantly from
Cabernet Sauvignon (≈ 55 %) and
Shiraz/Syrah (≈ 45 %), sourced from vineyards in the Western Cape (notably Paarl and Stellenbosch). The vineyards are planted on decomposed granite soils, often on south-westerly to westerly slopes about 300 m above sea level. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel, followed by a maturation in oak for several months. The wine aims to be approachable yet rewarding—rich fruit, soft tannins, and consistent appeal even as it matures.
Tasting Notes:
- Appearance: Deep ruby red color with a dark purple rim; reasonably full-bodied and visually rich.
- Aroma: Alluring dark berry fruits—blackberry, cassis and plum—with vanilla, oak spice, a hint of dark chocolate and gentle peppery notes from the Shiraz component.
-
Palate: Juicy and lush with ripe fruit flavors (black fruits & red berries), complemented by vanilla-oak, with soft, smooth tannins. Good structure, rich texture, balanced acidity.
- Finish: Long and dry with lingering fruit and spice; the oak influence persists but does not dominate. A satisfying end with gentle warmth.
- ABV: ~ 14 %
Serving Suggestions: Serve at about 16-18 °C to allow aromas to open. Great with rich, meaty dishes like grilled steak or lamb chops, hearty stews, braais (barbecues), or dishes with spicy or peppery components. Also pairs nicely with strong cheeses or tomato-based pastas. Decanting for 20-30 minutes can help soften tannins and let the flavors unfold.
