Robertson Red (often sold as Robertson Sweet Red or Robertson Winery Red Wine) is produced by Robertson Winery in the Robertson Valley, Western Cape, South Africa. It’s part of the winery’s more approachable, fruit-sweet range, designed for casual drinking rather than extended cellaring. The grapes are harvested relatively early to preserve natural fruitiness and keep alcohol low (around 8-9% ABV). The wine is typically a blend of varietals chosen for their ripe berry flavours and smooth, soft tannins. It aims for a balance between sweetness and freshness, making it enjoyable chilled or at a slightly cool room temperature.
Tasting Notes:
- Appearance: Bright ruby red colour; vivid and clear with a light, juicy look in the glass.
- Aroma: Aromatics of ripe strawberries, cherries, red berries; some floral and possibly berry jam or candy-like notes.
- Palate: Smooth sweetness up front, juicy red fruit (cherry, strawberry, raspberry); soft mouthfeel, low tannin; light acidity to help balance.
- Finish: Moderate and gently sweet; lingering fruit flavour, mild finish without strong oak or bitterness.
- ABV: ~ 8-9%
Serving Suggestions:
Serve slightly chilled (8-12 °C) to bring out its fruit character and freshness. Great as a casual sipping wine, or paired with spicy foods, BBQ, pizzas, desserts (especially fruit-based or chocolate), or mild cheeses. Also good for parties and relaxed gatherings where sweet wines are appreciated.
