Rupert & Rothschild Classique is produced by Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons, a joint venture between the Rupert family of South Africa and the Rothschild family of France. Established in 1997, the winery combines French winemaking tradition with the terroir of the Western Cape. Classique is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc (and often Petit Verdot), depending on vintage. The grapes are harvested by hand, fermented with care, and matured in French oak barrels (barriques) for around 16–18 months to develop depth without losing freshness. Alcohol content is about 13.5% ABV.
Tasting Notes:
- Appearance: Deep ruby red with hints of garnet at the rim; good saturation, clear and inviting.
- Aroma: Generous dark fruits–black cherry, cassis, plum–with floral top notes. Subtle oak shows through as vanilla, toasted spice, and a touch of cigar box or graphite.
- Palate: Rich fruit core; smooth entry with ripe berry and plum flavours, complemented by spice, oak, and gentle tannins. Balanced acidity adds freshness.
- Finish: Long, lingering; dark fruit fades into spice, oak, and a subtle chocolate or walnut nuance.
- ABV: ~ 13.5%
Serving Suggestions:
Serve at about 16-18 °C. Decanting for 30 minutes can open up the aromas and soften tannins. Pairs excellently with red meats (roast beef, lamb), game, rich stews, and hearty mushroom dishes. Also goes well with mature cheeses, especially hard or salty types.
