Smokehead Sherry Bomb is a limited-edition, no-age-statement single malt Scotch whisky from the Smokehead brand (Ian Macleod Distillers) on Islay. Fully matured in
Oloroso sherry casks, it delivers a bold fusion of intense peat smoke and lush sherry influence. Released globally in 2018 (about 18,000 bottles), it is designed for drinkers who enjoy both heavy smoke and expressive sherry character.
Tasting Notes:
-
Appearance: Deep amber with warm copper tones; substantial body and visible legs in the glass.
-
Aroma: Smoky peat dominates, mingled with dark chocolate, prunes, seaweed, medicinal iodine, cloves and rich sherry sweetness.
-
Palate: Thick, oily smoke up front, then sherried dried fruit (raisins, sultanas), barbecued banana, hints of rum-raisin ice cream, stem ginger, sea salt and sherry peel.
-
Finish: Long and warming, with lingering peat and smoke, spice (clove, red chili flake), treacle-like sweetness and a salty oak edge.
-
ABV: 48%
Serving Suggestions: Best enjoyed neat in a whisky glass (Glencairn or tulip) so the smoke and sherry layers can fully open. A few drops of water will mellow the alcohol heat and unveil more sherry depth. Excellent paired with dark chocolate, smoked meats (e.g. barbecue ribs), rich cheeses, or dessert flavours like sticky toffee pudding. A dram by a fire or after dinner works perfectly.
