Talisker Port Ruighe is a No-Age-Statement single malt Scotch whisky from the Talisker Distillery on the Isle of Skye. It’s matured initially in ex-bourbon and European oak casks, then finished in ruby Port wine casks. Bottled at 45.8% ABV, it seeks to blend Talisker’s signature peat, sea salt and smoke with richer red fruit and wine-cask influence.
Tasting Notes:
-
Appearance: Clear coppery amber with warm gold hues and good viscosity
-
Aroma: Sea spray and brine first, followed by rich red fruits (plums, raisins), orange pith; also toffee, vanilla fudge, mild chocolate and a smoky undertone
-
Palate: Sweet and thick; initial port-wine fruit and caramel, then Talisker’s characteristic pepper and smoke; hints of dark chocolate, burnt sugar and cedar; salty maritime notes re-emerge as it opens
-
Finish: Long, sweet-smoky; lingering red berry sweetness, tobacco/wood spice, with pepper and a touch of oak; smoke persists into the fade
-
ABV: 45.8%
Serving Suggestions: Best sipped neat in a Glencairn or similar whisky glass. A few drops of water can help open up the port fruit without losing smoke. Pairs wonderfully with dark chocolate, berry-based desserts, smoked meats or rich cheeses. Also good as a contemplative after-dinner dram.
